Therapy shouldn’t feel like a clinical interrogation. After seven years working with young people inside Colorado schools, I know that just opening up to someone new takes incredible guts. Because effective therapy relies on a strong therapeutic alliance, I prioritize tailored human connection over rigid assessment & clinical stuffiness, laying the groundwork for us to work as true partners in the process.

Licensed as a Professional Counselor, I work with individuals, couples, families, and groups. Graduating in 1998 from the University of Colorado, I received a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology, with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Studies. I have completed PACT 3 training and EMDR 2 training. I have served as the professional consultant for the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance for the Longmont/Firestone Chapter. My experience includes working with clients in multiple settings including psychiatric hospitals, public schools, mental health agencies, therapeutic day schools, and residential treatment facilities. Spanning more than 20 years, my therapy practice has evolved to include particular therapeutic theories and techniques that are not only effective in improving the lives of my clients but that also speak to my personal interests and values. In my therapy practice I work with individuals, couples and families facing many life challenges, including mood disorders, anxiety, personality disorders and trauma. My therapeutic approach is predicated on the knowledge that each of us has a family of origin and series of life events that deeply impact the way we function in our current work, family and love relationships. Understanding the "why" of a particular struggle can promote self-understanding, compassion and acceptance, and facilitate healing. Specially trained and certified in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and having utilized it in practice for almost twenty years, I've had the privilege of aiding in the recovery of clients who have endured extreme emotional trauma such as abuse, neglect, combat, death of a loved one and unexpected loss. Utilizing EMDR has had a profound effect on me as I have repeatedly witnessed the relief of suffering and ultimate liberation from the lasting effects of trauma. In couples therapy, I am trained in PACT (Psychobiological Approach to Couple Therapy), which integrates neuroscience, attachment theory and arousal regulation to help explain the ways in which couples relate to one another. The goal of this model is to establish a secure functioning system for the partnership. When not in my office I spend time in our beautiful Colorado with my loving husband of over two decades and my three wonderful children. My family, friends, nature, travel and yoga practice are essential elements of my own personal strength and growth.

I believe that therapy is a collaborative process between therapist and client, and that by working together we can help you move toward understanding and healing. Your job is to be curious about yourself. Mine is to inspire and assist you in exploring the unknown, uncomfortable, and unfamiliar. I strive to kindly challenge the way people think, and to be challenged myself. I am honored when asked to be present in challenging times, and work to balance holding room for discomfort while helping you discover how to move forward. My ultimate goal is to help you heal by building upon our respect, honesty, and mindfulness. I approach counseling from an experiential and existential perspective, and integrate attachment, feminist, and narrative therapies. My training includes EFT, Gestalt, MI, and DBT. I love counseling young adults, and have worked in school settings for 15 years. I also greatly enjoy working with couples. I'm active in LGBTQIA+ and polyamorous communities. I find joy in helping clients explore and heal, no matter what journey you find yourself on! I look forward to connecting with you. I specialize in working with teens, young adults, older adults, couples, relationship issues, life transitions, multicultural concerns, members of LGBTQIA+ communities, and polyamorous individuals, couples, and families.

It can be difficult to navigate and negotiate those changes. I'm here to help. I love challenging my clients and, even more, I love when they challenge me. I've seen tremendous growth in myself and my clients from this dynamic. I wanted to be a therapist because I wanted to be the person I needed when I was growing up. It takes courage and humility to seek out a therapist. If your own life, your romantic relationship, or both are leaving you unsatisfied, stuck, or unhappy, I commend you for considering outside help. The support of people whom I trust and who care for me – including my own therapists – has been instrumental to my own healing and growth. I would be honored to provide you with that same partnership in your journey of change. When we combine my training in therapy with your knowledge of who you are and where you want to go, we can identify meaningful goals together and help you progress toward them. Working with couples and individuals, I specialize in treating relationship and intimacy difficulties, men’s issues, and sexual issues. I use emotionally-focused, somatic, and cognitive-behavioral techniques. I bring genuine care, gentle humor, and deep acceptance to each client. In addition to working as a therapist, I am a research psychologist who earned a PhD at the University of Denver. I conduct research on healthy relationships and sexual health and have taught psychology courses at several colleges and universities in the Front Range. These roles help me continually learn how to be a better therapist.

I am honored to work with people feeling heartache inside the constraints of our modern world. Through conditioning + relational wounding, we temporarily lose touch with the deep, innate wisdom of our souls + bodies. Life can feel chaotic and daunting - we question ourselves and even feel dead inside. If you long to experience belonging as your true self, I’m here to shepherd you back to safety in relationship with yourself, your body and others. I was brought to this sacred work through my personal experience of rising above trauma. I’m devoted to guiding others out of the depths of struggle and into fulfillment and connection. What is needed is a safe space, a compassionate guide, and supportive tools to help us reintegrate all of our parts. With a capacity to listen deeply and a keen understanding of the complex layers of the human experience, I help my clients re-weave a life of self-worth, integrity and love. I champion your unique expression and full aliveness. I have clinical expertise working with complex trauma. I am committed to a healing path that is somatically rooted. Hello, I'm Elissa. Life can be challenging, and managing relationships can sometimes feel overwhelming. But you don't have to face these difficulties alone. Feelings of loneliness, loss of purpose, distance from loved ones, and grief over lost loved ones or unfulfilled dreams are common experiences. In children, behaviors often signal underlying struggles they are facing. I utilize a client-centered, solution-focused approach, incorporating techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and motivational interviewing. For children, I also employ play therapy, which has proven effective in addressing their unique needs. These methods help you develop new tools for your 'Life Tool Box,' empowering you to navigate life's challenges more effectively. I hold a Master's degree (MA) and am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. My areas of specialization include family relationships, children's mental and behavioral health, anxiety, depression, grief and bereavement, and trauma. With my experience and expertise, I aim to create a supportive and understanding environment where you can feel heard and validated. Working with me means embarking on a journey towards healing and growth. Whether through telehealth or in-person sessions at my Alamosa office, I am here to support you every step of the way. If you are ready to move forward, please reach out to set up an appointment. Together, we can work towards a brighter, more fulfilling future.

Most of the students I work with are figuring out who they are while juggling school, family, friendships, and their future. Many feel the weight of being “the strong one” for everyone else, but behind closed doors they’re tired, anxious, or questioning if they’re enough. Some are navigating being away from home for the first time, carrying family expectations, or balancing the pressure to succeed with the need to just breathe. Others feel out of place on campus and want a space where they don’t have to explain themselves or code-switch. I connect best with young people under 25 who are ready for honest conversations, who value a therapist that will both listen deeply and challenge them to grow. My goal is to give you room to unpack your story, understand your emotions, and figure out how to move through stress, relationships, and identity with more clarity and confidence.

The Journey to Your Internal Compass Starts with One Step. We cannot control what happens to us, but we can control how we respond. It takes courage to seek help for personal struggles. Therapy is like having a compass. The compass provides a sense of safety for travelers as they know they can rely on it to always point them in the right direction. With a compass—any compass—we can always pause for a moment in time and take stock of where we are so that we can continue to grow and change. All of us must change course from time to time because what we are doing isn’t working. If you are struggling with addiction, alcoholism, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, or trauma, allow me the honor to walk alongside you as you take the steps to the authentic you and discover your internal compass. I use evidence-based treatments tailored to individual needs to help clients attain and maintain long-term sobriety, improve relationships and well-being. I offer a safe and confidential environment on telehealth software. Healing happens within relationships and it's crucial you find a therapist you connect with. Call or email me today. Let’s walk this journey together.

Finding a space where you can show up fully, exactly as you are, is where real change begins. My work centers on trauma-informed and culturally responsive counseling, with a focus on emotional regulation and the connection between mind and body. Whether you're navigating identity, processing past experiences, or moving through a significant life transition, this is a space built for your healing. Many of the people I work with are adolescents and adults who carry the weight of trauma, systemic stressors, and the ongoing work of understanding themselves. Those from marginalized and BIPOC communities are especially welcome here, where your experiences will be met with the validation, safety, and cultural awareness they deserve. Beginning therapy takes courage, and honoring that courage is something I take seriously. Together, we'll build insight, develop tools for lasting change and empowerment, and move forward in a way that feels authentic to who you are. Therapy, at its best, is a collaboration. My approach is relational and integrative, drawing from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectal Behavior Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness, and somatic-based practices that attend to both the emotional and physical dimensions of your experience. What that looks like in practice is a space that is nonjudgmental, responsive to your pace, and shaped around your unique story. These techniques help create a sense of safety as you explore your experiences with safety and validation while guiding how we engage with what's been most difficult. The goal isn't just symptom relief; it's a deeper sense of self-trust and the kind of healing that stays with you. No matter where you are when you walk in, you can expect a compassionate, collaborative partner who meets you there. A deep curiosity about how our experiences shape the way we see ourselves, our relationships, and the world around us is what first drew me to this work. Through training and time spent with a diverse range of patients, that curiosity evolved into a genuine commitment to care that is both trauma-informed and culturally responsive. What guides me in every session is a belief that each person's story deserves to be honored in its full complexity. Bringing a warm, attuned, and thoughtful presence to the room is how I create space for you to feel seen, supported, and understood. Outside of the therapy room, I find joy in hiking, walking my dog Jax, reality TV, staying chronically online, and losing myself in a good book across any genre. These moments of rest and play are how I stay grounded, and that same sense of presence and balance is something I bring into my work with you.
