Therapists for college students near New York University
Welcome! I’m Rose Adonis, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I understand that college can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. You may be trying to manage academic pressure, relationships, work, family expectations, and major life changes while quietly struggling with anxiety, depression, difficulty focusing, low motivation, or emotional exhaustion. I work best with students who want a supportive and nonjudgmental space where they can be honest about what they are experiencing. You do not have to have everything figured out before reaching out. Together, we will discuss your concerns, identify your goals, and create a treatment plan that fits your individual needs. When appropriate, care may include medication management, practical coping strategies, and collaboration with a therapist or other healthcare professionals. My goal is to help you feel heard, supported, and more confident in managing your mental health so you can thrive both academically and personally. I look forward to meeting you and supporting you on your journey.
I provide compassionate, evidence-based therapy for adults struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, emotion dysregulation, relationship difficulties, and chronic self-criticism. I specialize in helping people who feel stuck despite trying hard or having previous therapy. My approach is warm, individualized, and nonjudgmental, integrating evidence-based treatments with mindfulness, attachment-informed, and compassion-centered approaches to create meaningful, lasting change.
Hello, My name is Vanessa McClaney, and I am in my final year at Yeshiva University, where I am pursuing my Master of Social Work (MSW). As a Clinical Resident at Living Purpose Mental Health Counseling, I find purpose in supporting individuals as they navigate life’s transitions, work through known and unknown stressors, and move toward healing in ways that feel authentic to them. Starting therapy can feel intimidating, and I know reaching out is often the hardest part. My goal is to create a space where you can show up exactly as you are- without pressure, judgment, or the expectation that you have to have everything figured out. I believe therapy works best when it feels like a genuine partnership, so my approach is collaborative, set at your pace, and centered on your unique goals and strengths. I work with women and men in all stages of life, individuals looking to break self-defeating patterns, adolescents, and parents navigating the joys and challenges of raising children, including children with special needs. I also have experience supporting individuals navigating substance use and recovery. In addition to my clinical training, I am a certified yoga instructor and enjoy incorporating mindfulness and holistic practices into therapy when they align with a client’s goals. I believe healing involves caring for both the mind and body, and sometimes the smallest moments of self-compassion can create meaningful change. My hope is that our sessions feel like an exhale- a place where you can set down what you’ve been carrying and simply be yourself. I look forward to welcoming you to my virtual couch and exploring how we can work together on your healing journey.
My approach is supportive, collaborative, and interactive. After an initial assessment, I may start by providing information about different therapy techniques and why they may be helpful for your concerns. I also start from a place of strength — though you may begin therapy feeling low or nervous, I aim to remind you of the resilience and skills you already possess, while helping you discover new ways to look at and tackle obstacles. I’m a fan of handouts and worksheets, and may encourage you to do practice exercises between sessions to work on the skills you’re learning. I will simultaneously help you focus on the here-and-now while pushing you to uncover and repair deeper, older patterns of relating to yourself and the world. I also believe that therapy is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor, and I often employ a variety of techniques from mindfulness, CBT and DBT approaches to enrich our work when useful. My style in the room is direct, empathic, collaborative, and playful. I have significant interest and experience working with LGBTQ+ populations, recent college graduates and young professionals navigating life transitions and identity exploration, and individuals and couples working towards greater relationship satisfaction and intimacy. I am a therapist at Octave, a behavioral health practice creating a new standard for mental health care that’s both high-quality and accessible. I start by delving into present and past issues through a cognitive behavioral lens as well as an attachment lens to assist clients in better understanding themselves and challenging some of the automatic thoughts and behaviors that perpetuate their anxiety or distress. My style is non-judgmental and interactive, often lending itself to moments of humor and positivity that further the therapeutic bond and offer opportunities for increased self-compassion and forgiveness. My first priority when beginning treatment with a client is the development of a trusting, comfortable, and open relationship through which exploration of difficult issues can be made with increased ease and sense of safety. Mr. Yagami, MSEd., MHC-LP, is a Mental Health Counselor with a Master of Science in Education in Mental Health Counseling from Fordham University. After Fordham, he conducted research in developmental/neurodevelopmental psychology at the University of Oregon, examining how early-life experiences shape and condition the way we experience the world. Mr. Yagami has experience as an outpatient mental health provider, providing psychotherapy to adults and adolescents. Mr. Yagami believes that our current challenges, whether it be anxiety, depression, or relational difficulties, are very often rooted in our childhood. Understanding the origins of how we think, feel, and behave is a vital step toward freeing ourselves from conditioned patterns and reconnecting with a more authentic sense of self. Mr. Yagami utilizes trauma-informed CBT, attachment, and acceptance-and-change frameworks. He works with diverse populations who are interested in exploring the core of their challenges and creating lasting change. To facilitate this, the quality of the client-and-therapist alliance becomes key, because in this alliance, a more secure sense of self is cultivated, which is the foundation for confidence and self-compassion. He considers himself not only a therapist, but also a cheerleader, advocate, and confidant. His therapy space is where clients are met with unconditional positive regard, compassion, and the freedom to be their authentic selves, and develop trust in their capabilities to navigate the world as best they can.
My therapeutic approach is a combination of solution-focused, strengths-based, and somatic psychotherapy within a cognitive-behavioral framework. I have experience working with college students/young adults coping with professional or life transitions, first-generation Americans, African-American or Caribbean-American men and women, adult/geriatric individuals with acute and/or chronic medical illnesses. Hello: I am a highly trained therapist with a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and 35 years of experience. I believe in the importance of the therapeutic relationship, and in providing a safe, caring and non-judgemental setting where you will feel free to discuss your problems and concerns. My approach to therapy is flexible, sometimes helping people deal with distressing symptoms and problems (e.g. painful breakups, panic attacks, etc.), and other times helping them gain a deeper understanding of their issues and themselves. I work well with people who suffer from depression, anxiety (e.g. panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder) and relationship issues, as well as difficulty with adjustments and transitions.
I use my sense of humor, most of all, and self-disclosure when I think it will help. I pride myself on trying to make therapy enjoyable. I have been a therapist for almost 20 years and have worked with so many different populations. I love what I do. Because I am a licensed Marriage family and child therapist, I can treat many people. My experience ranges from inpatient to outpatient as well as schools and foster homes. I specifically focus on trauma because we all have unresolved things that need to be resolved. I'm a therapist with Octave and Evernorth Behavioral Care Group. Octave is a mental health practice providing high-quality care covered by multiple insurances. Evernorth Behavioral Care Group is a behavioral health provider group in-network with Cigna Healthcare and Evernorth. For my availability, please reach out to Octave’s team by emailing or calling.

~Helping college and graduate students move beyond anxiety, overwhelm, and self-doubt into clarity, resilience, and deeper self-understanding~ College can look exciting from the outside — but many students find themselves quietly struggling with anxiety, overwhelm, self-doubt, or a sense that something just isn’t quite right. You might be: Feeling anxious, burned out, or constantly “on edge” Overthinking everything — relationships, decisions, your future Navigating identity, independence, or family pressure Struggling socially or feeling alone even when surrounded by people Dealing with health challenges, stress-related symptoms, or emotional exhaustion Wanting to understand yourself more deeply — not just “cope,” but actually change I work especially well with thoughtful, self-aware college and graduate students who are ready to go beyond surface-level coping and really understand what’s driving their patterns. My approach is integrative and mind-body focused, drawing from: EMDR (for processing past experiences that still impact you) DBT (for emotional regulation and practical tools) Nervous system / mind-body work (understanding anxiety, stress, and physical symptoms) Insight-oriented therapy (helping you make sense of yourself on a deeper level) I aim to create a space that is both warm and real — where you feel understood, but also gently challenged to grow. This work isn’t just about getting through college — it’s about helping you build a foundation for a more grounded, confident, and authentic life.
