Therapists for college students near New York University
During your life, you may experience difficult periods of adjustment related to major life changes and/or losses, difficulty in relationships, and/or cultural/social differences in environmental contexts. These periods in your life may lead to or be related to general difficulty coping with life circumstance, depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. I provide a holistic approach to working with clients striving to understand them from an intrapsychic, interpersonal, and sociocultural perspective. In working with you, I endeavor to understand how your personality, relationships, and sociocultural identities and environmental contexts interact to affect your psychological functioning and wellbeing. Personal development through counseling/psychotherapy comes from feeling secure in a relational context to explore one's issues. Primary to this process is the establishment of a nurturing therapeutic relationship/alliance. In establishing a safe environment, I will assist you in experiencing more satisfying attitudes, relationships, and feeling more empowered. A major aspect of my work involves understanding how racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity affects one's psychosocial functioning. Understanding your sociocultural identities and how they inform and affect your life assists me in determining what interventions and techniques will be most appropriate for you.
College is a time of real growth — and real pressure. For many students, it's also when questions about identity, mental health, and how they move through the world come into sharper focus. I work with college students who are navigating anxiety, depression, burnout, identity exploration, trauma history, or the particular exhaustion that comes with being neurodivergent in demanding academic environments. Many of the young adults I work with are autistic, ADHD, or both — and are often doing so without the scaffolding that got them through high school. Others are transgender or gender-diverse, and are figuring out who they are while managing minority stress, family dynamics, and systems that don't always make things easy. My approach is relational and collaborative. I don't follow a rigid protocol — I draw from ACT, DBT, and CBT, and I tailor what we do to who you are and what you actually need. Sessions are a place to build insight, develop real skills, and figure out how to live more fully as yourself. I'm a licensed clinical psychologist with advanced training in gender-diverse care, trauma, and neurodevelopment. Before opening my practice, I spent two years at Yale's Pediatric Gender Program and completed my doctoral internship at Yale School of Medicine. I keep my caseload focused so I can do this work with the depth it deserves. Sessions are available via telehealth across Connecticut and New York, and in person in Southington, CT — which may be convenient for students at nearby colleges and universities. I also see adolescents and teens, so referrals for younger clients are welcome. I'm happy to connect with counseling center staff to discuss fit, coordination of care, or consultation. The best way to reach me is through my website or by phone.

I hope to make your experience a little easier by listening with compassion and curiosity, moving at your pace, and centering the therapy around your needs. We can work through whatever barriers are getting in the way of creating more play, softness, love, rest & support in your life. I am person-centered. I work collaboratively with clients, providing individualized care customized to address your needs and concerns. It is my belief that the client is the expert of their own lives, and I am along on the journey to provide the therapeutic support needed. I prefer to use trauma-informed, psychodynamic, and behavioral approaches to assist with achieving your goals.
I offer psychotherapy for students and working professionals who are struggling with their mental health, having relationship issues, or are experiencing setbacks in their day-to-day. My focus is on providing clinical support and symptom relief to individuals who may be struggling with emotional, existential, or behavioral issues in a safe, non-judgemental space.
People come to therapy for many different reasons, but, at the core, they are looking for understanding, relief, or growth. Maybe you’re trying to understand why you feel the way you do, or you find yourself caught in the same difficult thoughts again and again. Perhaps you’ve noticed patterns of behavior that seem to work against your own well-being. You might be facing a life transition—chosen or not—and are feeling anxious about what’s next. Or maybe you just feel stuck. Therapy offers a space to slow down and make sense of what’s happening. Together, we can clarify your current experience, explore how you got here, and begin to shape a healthier, more fulfilling path forward.
I’m a Clinical Psychologist (board certified in Group Psychology), and I work with college and graduate students who want to understand themselves better and feel more at ease in their lives and relationships. In therapy, I offer a space to slow down, reflect, and make sense of what’s happening—whether it’s stress, anxiety, relationships, identity, motivation, or big transitions. My approach is psychoanalytic and relational, which means we pay attention not just to symptoms, but to the deeper patterns and experiences that shape how you think and feel.

I enjoy working with individuals who have ADHD, anxiety, self-esteem issues, trauma and/or emotion dysregulation. Through the use of specialized therapies (including CBT), I help you develop the ability to manage and express your thoughts and feelings, improve your relationships, get your needs met, extinguish the need for unhealthy behaviors, and develop a sense of internal completeness. I love being a therapist and understand the risk involved in taking the first steps toward getting help. Contact me today to begin your journey toward a satisfying life! While I am happy to address relationship issues, I do not provide couples therapy. I also do not treat eating disorders.
Working with a counselor can be anxiety provoking, so my focus is on helping you to feel at ease and create clear goals to make you feel better. I love to support clients in developing skills to manage emotions, build mindfulness in moving through pain, and find compassionate ways to heal. I have spent over 15 years facilitating individual and group services that center around grief, schema, dissociation, and complex trauma. I have been trained in solution focused therapy, ACT, DBT, and EMDR. My passion is helping others customize their healing journey and to take pleasure in every step on their path. It's rare that anyone wakes up overnight a different person. Rather it's through the beautiful process that we develop insight, wisdom, and happiness.
My work in the field of counseling began in 1992 and I have been a clinician in practice for over 25 years. I specialize in helping clients work through trauma, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, and supporting them on their journey to improved balance in life. My therapeutic approach is person centered. I work closely with clients to help them connect with their values, gain personal insight, understanding and self-compassion. With a trauma-informed mindset, I strive to create a safe and therapeutic environment. This entails a blend of treatment interventions designed to best match individual needs. I draw inspiration from the work of colleagues like: Brene Brown, Bessel Van der Kolk, Gabor Mate, Alfred Adler, Carl Rogers, and Carl Jung. These individuals are leaders in the field of counseling and therapy. They are the inspiration that has helped build my foundation for an enduring and balanced practice. My counseling background includes work with adults, college students, children and families, couples, Military Personnel, Veterans, and their families, as well as disabled adults. In my current work, I focus on helping individuals rebuild a foundation from which to grow from. Because I am a firm believer in the power of yoga, self-reflection, and meditation; when appropriate, I weave Eastern Philosophies into treatment. For example, the body holds trauma in seven main body parts (pelvis, diaphragm, throat, jaw, hamstrings, shoulders, and neck). With the application of some yoga, meditation, and mindful attention, we can help the body release underlying trapped feelings so that healing can begin.
We are a team of clinical social workers specializing in yoga/mindfulness, EMDR, and CBT. Our understanding is that in order to truly heal, we must honor our whole-body and mind working together. Many of our clients find that much of their suffering is stored throughout their bodies as anxiety, depression, and stress begin to take over. We support students as they navigate the unfamiliar and sometime daunting transition into adulthood and offer a warm, hopeful guide towards joy and purpose. Our virtual counseling services are available to individuals located in Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Vermont, Maine, Illinois, and California. We welcome you to get to know us, the services we offer, and reach out to schedule session.
My specialties include depression, anxiety, relationship challenges, family conflict, and life stage transitions. Treatment is customized to your needs and therefore I'm committed to partnering with you to determine the approach best suited for you. My mission is to empower you to be your best and to experience life at its best. I am fluent in English and Spanish and can conduct sessions in your language of choice.
Hello, and thank you for taking the time to connect! You likely wouldn’t be reading this if you weren’t struggling with the pressures of life, and the demands placed upon you from both internal and external sources. I would like to take the time to acknowledge that where you are in your journey to find help is challenging and I am here to make that process as smooth as I am able. The first thing to know about me is that I attempt to live my life in an authentic manner that honors my truth, self-identity, and worldview; while helping others discover what that may look like for them. Some of the roles I fill in my life are husband, father, son, sibling, friend, mentor, and helper. While each of these roles is unique and requires special attention, they each contribute to my passion in life and therapeutic approach. I began my journey to becoming a therapist almost a decade ago, when I realized my previous career in healthcare management was not aligned with my passions and purpose in life. I found myself running businesses for other people who were focused on profits and growth, but lacking a focus on people and connection, which is where my heart finds fulfillment. It was then I decided to change my career path and further my knowledge in the human experience. With the goal of learning how to connect with others in a meaningful way that can lead to growth and healing, I pursued my education and licensure as a clinical mental health counselor. Through a person centered approach, which employs a wide variety of evidence based interventions, I work with my clients to achieve their goals in a way that fits them individually. I believe that every person is unique and can benefit from unconditional acceptance and compassion. By creating this environment of acceptance, we are able to identify areas that you want to change and implement strategies tailored to your experience. I look forward to meeting you and having the opportunity to help you along your journey. Contact information: jwhitlock@truedirectionmhc.com or Phone: 845-264-2477

Have you found yourself struggling to understand or manage your emotions? Feeling lost, stressed, overwhelmed, or empty, and don’t know where to begin? Improving your mental well-being can be an intimidating process, but you don’t have to do it alone. Whether you are having trouble managing your urges, thoughts, or behaviors, experiencing grief, relationship or identity issues, or just feeling like you've lost a sense of peace and purpose somewhere along the way, my personalized, integrative, and trauma-informed approach to psychotherapy can help.
I work best with college students and young adults who may be feeling overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, distracted, emotionally exhausted, or unsure of how to manage school alongside other life demands. Many of my clients are navigating ADHD symptoms, sleep difficulties, relationship concerns, identity exploration, family expectations, trauma, or major life transitions. My approach is supportive, collaborative, and judgment-free. I take time to understand the whole person—not only their symptoms—including sleep, nutrition, stress, daily routines, physical health, culture, and personal goals. Together, we develop a realistic treatment plan that may include medication, healthy lifestyle changes, and coordination with a therapist or other healthcare providers. I especially welcome students from BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities who are looking for care that respects their identity and lived experiences.
My name is Courtney and my focus in my counseling work connects with guiding individuals to rediscover their sense of self when facing challenges. I am dedicated to offering supportive reflection and compassionate listening, empowering you to tap into your inner resilience, strengths, and sense of purpose. I specialize in working with individuals (16+) experiencing symptoms of anxiety and depression, and with those who are experiencing difficulties with life transitions, self-esteem, and stress. I have specific experience working with individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQIA+), and I also provide EMDR therapy. I strive to create a safe and supportive environment where we can address past challenges, current stressors, and concerns about what's next. My goal is to empower you to embrace your true self, listen to your inner voice with kindness, and cultivate deeper connections through vulnerability. I welcome you to contact me to set up a free consultation.
