"The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" (Tao Te Ching). I know how hard that first step can be. I have been a therapist for over 20 years, and I'm here to help you through struggles and teach you techniques and coping skills that can help you manage your stress levels, communicate better with loved ones, achieve a balance between work and relaxation, and change patterns that no longer serve you. I have extensive experience working with adults, children (age 10+), adolescents, couples and families and used evidence based treatments to bring about relief quickly. If you're looking for extra support through a challenging situation or want to move in a new direction in life, I look forward to working with you to achieve your goals. My approach is eclectic and individualized including (but not limited to) CBT, Strengths-Based Therapy, EMDR, Meditation/Mindfulness. I like to create a safe environment for clients to explore challenges, express their needs, and work towards a happier, healthier life. My schedule is open to day and evening appointments, and I welcome you to contact me. We are all "works in progress."

Hi, I'm Shani! I'm a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Massachusetts and a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in Maine. My clients come to me for support with a number of concerns including: major life transitions including coming out, grief, transitioning to adulthood, or shifting family dynamics. They may also be working through identity exploration, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, anxiety, or struggling with managing the constant heaviness of the world. My clients tend to be insight-oriented and motivated to engage in the therapeutic process. My style is warm, non-judgmental, patient, and highly attentive to issues of social justice. I practice with sex-positive, body-positive lenses and actively work to incorporate values of decolonization and anti-racism. I am deeply committed to supporting members of my LGBTQIA+ community and our allies and I believe strongly that immigrants strengthen our communities. When clients first start therapy, I take great care to establish a counseling space where they feel safe, supported, respected, seen, and heard regardless of background. I want our time together to be something that clients look forward to and believe the quality of the client-counselor relationship sets the foundation for the work that we will do together. When you’re ready, I’m here to help. Even if you don't fully believe it yourself just yet, I know that things can - and will - get better, and I am so looking forward to working with you.

Welcome! I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and psychotherapist. One of my areas of emphasis is counseling undergraduate and graduate students who are navigating the complexities of college life and balancing the demands that often accompany this time. It is common for these years to bring discovery and connection as well as stress, pressure and anxiety. In collaboration, we can work through what is challenging or making you feel stuck or avoidant. We can address mental health concerns that may be disrupting your path. We will look at your day-to-day functioning as well as the bigger picture of your life. I will support you in taking meaningful steps towards your goals. I have extensive specialized experience treating OCD, generalized anxiety, panic disorder, and BFRBs. While in training, I also completed an internship at a college counseling center where I had the wonderful opportunity to counsel students entering healthcare professions. It can be helpful for potential clients to know ahead of time that I am "in- network" with Boston University Aetna Student Health specifically. If you have this insurance, your visits are covered and you are only responsible for your copay. In all other cases, I am "out-of network." I am happy to offer a superbill invoice you can submit to your insurance for partial or full reimbursement, if you have out-of-network benefits and are eligible for reimbursement. If you aren't sure whether you do, you can call the phone number on your insurance card to ask. I am licensed in MA and CT. I look forward to getting to know you!

** Telehealth and In-Person appointments.** We all long for our experiences, feelings, and needs to be seen, recognized, and honored. I bring to our work deep respect for your concerns and suffering. I place the therapeutic relationship at the heart of our work together which I approach with curiosity and empathy. I am most interested in what your unique experience is, and I aim to listen deeply on our road toward understanding. A safe-enough space will help us to transform your patterns of experience that interfere with your ability to be compassionate with yourself, to build meaningful relationships, and to work and play creatively, in other words, to live a fulfilling life. I am humbled by the complexity of human existence and feel honored to work with individuals from different racial and cultural backgrounds, sexual and gender identities, as well as spiritual and religious affiliations. In addition to my private practice, I am an Instructor in Psychology at Harvard Medical School (part-time) and supervise psychology interns and psychiatrist fellows. I served as the co-chair of the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Society for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychology Graduate Student Committee helping young clinicians explore and develop their professional identities.

I see College and Graduate students at all year levels. I work with individuals and couples ( married and unmarried, who are dissatisfied with or want to improve their partnerships). Even the best parts of your academic career -- having more control over your own life, living with new people, getting to know a new city, forming new relationships, coming out to yourself or others, learning and pursuing what interests and inspires you -- can create stress. Relating to your family may be complicated, particularly if there have been difficulties at home. Loss, divorce, illness, abuse or substance abuse may factor into your story. You may be the first person in your family to go to college or beyond. You may have a chronic medical condition, visible or invisible to others. Figuring out who you want to be and what you have to work with may be unnecessarily burdensome to do all by yourself. When you hit a bump in the road, psychotherapy can help you problem solve, understand yourself better and come up with new strategies to move forward. Getting to know yourself better can be an important part of your education. Getting a handle on anxiety and/or depression can be crucial to making life work for you. Individual or couple psychotherapy can sychotherapy, free up energy to pursue life goals and improve relationships. I have worked with college and graduate students, as individuals and in couples, for over 25 years both in a University Counseling Center and in my private practice. I also have trained other professionals to work with students Please see my website or Psychology today profile for more information about my practice with couples and individual adults. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists/roberta-caplan-waltham-ma/113684 I offer a free telephone screening to see if working with me might meet your current needs. I accept BC/BS PPO plans (not HMO) and can provide documentation you would need for out-of-network benefits for other plans.

The best mental health care occurs when the patient's needs are prioritized and deeply integrated into the treatment plan. Whether you're dealing with anxious thoughts, phobias, learning difficulties, physical symptoms tied to mental health, depression, grief, or feeling like a dark cloud is always blocking out your light, help is available. By creating a judgment-free environment that fosters safe and open communication, we’ll work together to carefully assess your or your loved one’s unique situation and develop the most effective care plan. I believe the key to addressing many unwanted feelings and behaviors lies in combining holistic and pharmacological approaches, including modifying one's environment, engaging in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and using medications to address chemical imbalances in the brain. As your provider, I will work diligently to create a personalized medication plan that alleviates your challenges while minimizing tolerable side effects. Additionally, using evidence-based measurement tools, we can track treatment effectiveness and make necessary adjustments along the way. I am a comprehensive, seasoned therapist. I work with all issues, big or small. With me, you could: fix or resolve issues, reduce stress, get clarity, learn to regulate emotions, sort through life plans, heal emotional wounds, eliminate symptoms, discuss root issues, unpack deep truths, explore existential meaning, or get support. You will discover why things are how they are, and how to change. You will obtain tools and methods for implementing changes, while decreasing barriers to change. I am a client-centered psychologist who works with adults and adolescents (13+). I believe therapy should involve the whole person - including our internal, social, societal, spiritual, and physical selves. I invite clients to be collaborators in finding and exploring what will help them achieve growth. I provide a warm, inclusive, and nonjudgmental environment and believe a strong client-therapist relationship is essential for growth and change. I integrate aspects of multiple therapeutic modalities, including behavioral approaches (CBT, DBT, behavioral medicine/health psychology), mindfulness-based interventions, humanism, existential, relational and developmental theory, motivational interviewing, and psychodynamic-informed care. I help patients/clients address a range of concerns including but not limited to: depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use struggles, difficulties in relationships, grief/loss, identifying life goals, navigating life transitions, and balancing work-life demands. I received my training at William James College (Newton, MA). Trained with Advocates Community Counseling, Rutgers University College Counseling, and Boston Behavioral Medicine. I completed a post-doctoral behavioral health fellowship at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates and worked there as a staff psychologist until October 2019. You smile and say “I’m fine” but it's not true. You don’t necessarily know what’s wrong so sometimes you even convince yourself you're OK. You feel overwhelmed trying to balance the demands of being a student, living on your own, preparing for your future, maintaining relationships with family/friends, gaining financial independence, etc. It feels like everybody around you has it all under control. You question whether you're depressed or anxious. Maybe you've learned to cope by scrolling on your phone and self-medicating. You want to learn healthier coping skills. You want to talk to someone who only has YOU in mind. You deserve to find a therapist who will listen, care, support and advocate for you. I have experience working with college-aged students who present with a variety of concerns including: ADHD, anxiety and depression, domestic violence, eating disorders, grief/loss, life transitions, relational conflict, self-esteem issues, stress management, substance use, and trauma. Check out my website to learn more about me! I offer an initial 45-minute consultation free of charge to all potential clients so you can make sure I am a good fit for you. Feel free to contact me by phone or email if you have any questions or if you would like to schedule a consultation.
