Hi! My name is Maya Rogers-Bursen, and I am a licensed mental health counselor and art therapist. I was adopted from India when I was six months old and my narrative has shaped the work I love doing with adoptees, and families in the adoption constellation. I am a transracial adoptee with a private practice focused in supporting those navigate the ups and downs of the adoption journey. I named my practice Chandani Post Adoption Counseling - Chandani is my birth name. It means moonlight in Hindi, a place I often look towards when I think about birth family (feel free to read more of my story on my website – Chandanicounseling.com) Adoption trauma refers to loss. Loss of birth family/culture, identity/connection. Themes that may come up in our work look similar to loss, grief, birth/adoptive family, communication, identity development, shame, guilt, sense of belonging, transracial adoption, race/culture, international adoption, family dynamics, anxiety, worry, fear, relationships. It’s my goal to hold space for the everyday moments while looking at things through an adoption lens. If you are looking to learn more about yourself in relation to adoption, I welcome the opportunity to be in conversation together! * If you are not an adoptee but my profile sparks interest, please reach out and we can decide together if it feels like a good fit!
My practice specialization is focused on women’s issues and perinatal mental health. In response to the recent changes in access to women's reproductive healthcare, many of us are feeling confused, scared, (and p*ssed off!). I provide a safe space for women to process whatever emotions they may be feeling as a result of their direct experiences or related to future concerns. I believe that the relationship between clinician & client is the foundation for a successful therapy experience. Please know that I realize how difficult it is to connect with a “stranger” when you are feeling overwhelmed and vulnerable. Therapy can be challenging, but it can also be very enlightening. It can also be light-hearted & fun. (I guarantee a few laughs during each session!) I utilize a variety of therapy techniques, which ultimately allows for flexibility in making sure that you get what you need in a way that works for you.

Over the past five years, I’ve focused on supporting clients who identify as LGBTQ+, neurodiverse, and other marginalized communities, providing care that is compassionate, affirming, and tailored to each person’s unique journey. *I am always available for gender affirming care support letters* I am a queer & trans therapist that works with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, specializing in TGNC clients. The majority of my clients are non-binary, trans or gender expansive, and many are also neurodivergent. I believe in the importance of self-acceptance and self-compassion. As a result, I bring my genuine self to session, so you can feel comfortable unmasking or being authentic in our work together. My goal is to create a safe, affirming space where you can be you and feel seen and heard. I enjoy incorporating geek culture into therapy sessions, and I will sometimes use metaphors or references to help you connect with your emotions and experiences in a way that is meaningful to you. As a therapist of multiple lived experiences (multiracial, queer, trans and neurodivergent), I'm sensitive to the impact of intersectionality, power, and oppression on communities and individual experiences. I work through anti-racist, social justice, and trauma-informed lenses, and I strive to recognize and acknowledge the multiple layers of discrimination and privilege that can impact the way we move through the world.
Finding the right therapist matters, and starting therapy can feel vulnerable. I aim to create a warm, supportive space where you feel understood, respected, and empowered. My goal is for therapy to be both practical and reflective—a place for insight, growth, and genuine change. I’m a licensed clinical psychologist working with individuals navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, emotion dysregulation, increased stress, and life transitions. I work with individuals at different stages of life, including adults, adolescents, and children, and I also support parents as they navigate their own challenges and transitions. My approach to therapy is collaborative, flexible, and grounded in evidence-based practices, including CBT and DBT. I believe therapy should move at a pace that honors where you are and what you’re ready for. Together, we’ll explore how your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors connect, and work toward changes that feel both meaningful and sustainable. My background: I earned my doctorate degree (PsyD) in Combined School and Clinical Psychology from the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology at Yeshiva University. My professional experiences include work in community mental health, college counseling, and private practice settings, where I’ve provided evidence-based treatment to individuals across the lifespan. I also have experience supervising PhD/PsyD students and post-doctoral fellows.
