Therapists for college students near New York University
Hi! We are a therapy practice providing individual therapy, couples counseling, group therapy, and psychedelic integration. We offer in-person therapy sessions in our Williamsburg, Brooklyn offices, as well as online therapy sessions throughout New York state. We are an excellent match for people who subscribe to non-traditional lifestyles and we specialize in working with the LGBTQ+ community. Our staff is expertly trained, multilingual, and diverse in experience and background. However you identify, we strive to truly know you as an individual - your values, beliefs, and outlook on life - while also maintaining an appreciation for overarching human needs, such as the desire for connection with others and the longing to feel understood. We offer therapy that is tailored toward your specific needs and rests on an affirming, humanistic, and trauma-informed stance. We are trained in a range of modalities, including psychodynamic, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), internal family systems (IFS), narrative therapy, and somatic work. We will help you build insight into why you are feeling distress, so that you can use this insight to make positive changes to improve your life and start feeling better. While working to deepen insight, we concurrently help you process any difficult emotions that arise. Depending on your needs and requests, we may integrate therapy skills and tools, mindfulness exercises, or movement and art in our work together. We consider therapy to be a co-created process and attend to your mind, heart, body, and spirit to help you heal.
Hi, I’m Jennifer Shrier, a psychotherapist specializing in working with college students, young adults, and adults. I understand that the college years can be both exciting and overwhelming — a time of transition, pressure, identity development, relationship challenges, and increasing independence. My approach to therapy is warm, collaborative, and supportive. I aim to create a space where clients feel comfortable being themselves and talking openly about what they’re going through, without judgment. I work with students navigating anxiety, stress, depression, self-esteem concerns, relationship issues, academic pressure, life transitions, and questions around identity and direction. In therapy, I believe the relationship itself is important. I strive to help clients feel understood while also building insight, coping skills, resilience, and greater self-awareness. My style is thoughtful and engaged, and I tailor treatment to each individual’s needs and goals. Reaching out for support can feel difficult, and I value creating a space where students can feel safe, supported, and empowered as they navigate this stage of life.
I'm a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) who supports children, adolescents, young adults, and adults as they navigate anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, low self-esteem, life transitions, family challenges, and more. Authenticity and acceptance guide my approach, allowing me to be supportive, respectful of your individual experience, and compassionate. I look forward to working alongside you to find what’s most helpful. Together we'll create a connection where you feel understood, able to find confidence in yourself, and equipped with the tools to navigate life's challenges. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectal Behavior Therapy (DBT) ground my work, connecting with people facing a range of mental health challenges to help you better understand your thoughts and emotions, develop effective coping skills, and feel more confident navigating challenges. My approach is warm, collaborative, and genuine, as creating a safe, welcoming space matters to me, one where you feel understood and empowered to create meaningful change in your life. That safety comes from a supportive, nonjudgmental environment paired with a style that's engaging and empowering, tailored to your unique needs. My path to becoming a therapist began with a genuine interest in understanding people and building strong connections with others. Working with children, adolescents, adults, and families in both school and partial hospitalization settings showed me how important it is to create a space where people feel understood while also learning practical skills they can carry with them outside of therapy. This experience deepened my commitment to providing warm, individualized, and evidence-based care with openness, empathy, and an individualized perspective. In my free time, I love going for walks, working out, dancing, spending time with friends, and discovering new restaurants around NYC!
I am a licensed Clinical Social Worker who works with young adults experiencing life changes with attending college or graduating college and need guidance of what will be their next steps in life after college. Although these can be milestones for young adults, it can also bring questions and several emotions that can affect their daily life. Some people may experience anxiety and depression while in college as they adjust to life on campus and being away from their friends and families.
Healing is rarely a direct path, and you don't have to walk it alone. As a queer psychotherapist, my work is rooted in LGBTQIA+-affirming, trauma-informed, relational therapy for adult individuals and couples. Whatever brings you here, whether it's a persistent sense of being stuck, patterns that feel hard to break, or a quiet discontent you haven't been able to name, I'm here to help you make sense of it. Drawing from a psychodynamic framework, I help you explore the cycles of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that may be keeping you from living the life you want. Together, we'll uncover how you became who you are, and how you'd like to grow. My commitment is to create a space that feels genuinely safe for exploration, connection, and vulnerability so that you can show up openly and honestly in our work together. Specializing in attachment-based, relational therapy, my approach is engaging, open-minded, gentle, and direct. Getting to know your internal world fully, understanding who you are and the challenges you've faced, is where our work begins. From there, we find pathways forward together. You can expect a compassionate, nonjudgmental environment where curiosity and honesty are always welcome. Using psychodynamic and relational therapy, we'll explore what's keeping you feeling stuck, conflicted, or discontent, and work through it at a pace that feels right for you. Every person who comes to me brings a unique story, set of needs, and goals, and my approach is personalized to reflect that. Trust and connection are the foundation of everything we do here. My path to becoming a therapist is deeply personal. Growing up, navigating my own queerness and systems of oppression, coming of age in a low-income and unstable home where I was parentified at an early age, and supporting family members through addiction and encounters with the justice system shaped how I see the world and how I show up for the people I work with. Those experiences gave me a firsthand understanding of how systems, circumstances, and identity can profoundly affect a person's sense of self and sense of possibility. They also deepened my commitment to providing care that is integrated, compassionate, and anti-oppressive. Whatever you've carried, and however you've gotten here, I bring both clinical training and lived understanding to our work together. Outside of the therapy room, you'll find me behind a drum kit, out on my bike exploring Brooklyn, or underwater on a scuba dive. Photography, swimming, and reading nonfiction also keep me curious and grounded, while competitive game nights, good TV, and my amazing cats provide plenty of joy and laughter.

I have many years experience helping people with their emotional problems. I work with individuals of all ages from adolescence to old age. My approach is listening-focused. No two persons who have come to see me have had the same issues and struggles to contend with. So what is needed is close, attentive listening so I can know how you can most benefit from my help. Many patients prefer to focus on the here and now problems they feel most immediately. But others want to explore their root causes in earlier relations and problems. I try to tailor my practice to work at either or both these levels of intensity.
Welcome! I'm Madeleine Conner, a Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW) with five years of experience supporting children, adolescents, and adults through personal challenges, including life transitions, anxiety, attachment issues, mood disturbances, trauma, and stress. Three of those years have been dedicated specifically to delivering trauma-informed therapy services to early childhood populations. Emotional regulation and psychodynamic therapy are at the center of my work, and I use these approaches to help patients of all ages explore how their experiences shape their emotions, thoughts, and relationships. My commitment is to extend the best care, support, and counseling to each person I have the privilege of working with. Compassion and collaboration are the foundation of everything I do in the therapy room. I tailor my approach to your unique needs, goals, and experiences, because no two people, and no two paths, are the same. Working together, you can expect a space that is customized to your objectives and rooted in genuine human connection. I believe a strong collaborative relationship is key to promoting meaningful growth, and I draw on person-centered therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), among other evidence-based approaches, to help you develop insight and gain practical tools for navigating life's challenges. From an early age, I had an innate ability to hold space for others. I was often the person friends could turn to with the parts of themselves they didn't feel safe sharing elsewhere. Those moments let me witness firsthand the power of empathy and support, and they planted the seed for the work I do today. That lifelong desire to help others feel understood, accepted, and supported led me to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Spanish from Amherst College, and then a Master of Social Work from New York University. Each step deepened my understanding of what it means to truly show up for another person, and that understanding is what I bring into every session with you. When I'm not working, you'll find me painting, crocheting, singing, doing yoga, or spending time with my dog, Hank. I also just learned how to play Mah Jongg!
Times of transition are exciting and challenging. Starting something new, moving through inflection points in your education and career, preparing for completion and uncertainty while you figure out what's next, are all important processes everyone hopes will go smoothly - but sometimes they can feel rocky. Even good changes or subtle shifts can feel unsettling, especially for highly sensitive people. If social, academic or emotional / mental health issues are stressing you and making it hard to feel confident and supported in working towards your goals, therapy can be a great tool to help increase understanding about "how it all works" and get support in developing patience and progress towards deepening clarity and commitment to your goals. Anxieties, insecurity, depression, difficult patterns in relationships or work, and problems focusing can be understood and changed, so you have more energy and confidence to devote to living. Become more connected to yourself and others through a specialized process of exploration with a trained professional, and see a difference in your life. A therapist’s expertise and experience are very important, but the *key* ingredient of effective therapy is a “good fit” between you and your therapist. If you’d like to meet and see how it would be to work together, I would be pleased to hear from you. Beginning work as a psychotherapist in clinic settings in 1995, I opened my private practice in 2002. I received my Master’s Degree in Social Work from New York University, am a New York City based Licensed Clinical Social Worker (licensed in New York and New Jersey), and earned a certificate in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy from the NYFS Institute.

College and graduate school can be exciting, but they can also feel overwhelming. You may be struggling with stress, anxiety, low mood, loneliness, relationship challenges, questions about your identity, or the pressure to keep up academically while managing everything else in your life. For some students, adjusting to life away from home, navigating independence, or recovering from difficult experiences such as trauma or past hardships can make this time especially challenging. I'm Kate Conway, a Mental Health Counselor Fellow (MHC-F) at Modern Talk, working under the clinical supervision of our licensed directors. Working with college students and young adults is at the heart of what I do — I have a deep understanding of the unique pressures this stage of life brings, and I know how much courage it takes to ask for support when you're in the middle of it. My approach is rooted in psychodynamic and relational therapy — I work with you to understand the patterns, experiences, and relationships shaping how you think, feel, and move through the world, while drawing on practical, skills-based tools when the work calls for it. Whether you're looking for support during a difficult period, trying to better understand yourself, or hoping to build healthier coping skills and relationships, I'm here. I offer a warm, collaborative, and nonjudgmental space where you can talk openly, gain insight, and develop the tools to navigate this chapter with greater confidence and resilience.

I work collaboratively with clients to explore underlying patterns, develop practical coping skills, and create meaningful, lasting change. I strive to create a warm, compassionate, and nonjudgmental space where you can feel understood and supported. Welcome! I'm Casey Nordberg, a Limited Permit Mental Health Counselor (MHC-LP) in Brooklyn. I work with individuals of all ages, specializing in trauma, attachment and relationship issues, and life transitions. With a background working with families in child welfare and private practice, I bring a nuanced perspective to the therapeutic space, creating a safe environment for a diverse population of patients to explore the experiences that have shaped who they are today. This person-centered, compassion-driven lens supports those navigating emotional struggles, relationship challenges, and feelings of stagnation. In a fast-moving city that often rewards us for pushing forward at the expense of our well-being, taking the step to seek support shows real bravery, and I don't take that courage and trust lightly. I believe everyone has lived experience worth exploring with care, and I'm honored to help you find insight into your history and clarity on the steps ahead as I get to know you and we start this journey together. I am dedicated to meeting you where you are, centering your experiences as we work together to understand and move through what's difficult. Because life's ruptures most often occur in the context of relationships, I believe that building a healing, reparative relationship is one of the most important parts of therapy. That’s why I lead with empathy and warmth, taking a holistic, culturally humble approach, integrating relational and psychodynamic work with evidence-based strategies like motivational interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Mindfulness techniques, so that treatment can be tailored to what actually fits your life. In our work together, we'll collaborate to understand and gently challenge the thought patterns and behaviors that keep you feeling stuck, while honoring the role these strategies have played in helping you survive difficult experiences in the past. From there, we'll find the tools and coping skills that feel right for you, working toward clarity, self-compassion, and meaningful, sustainable change. My path to becoming a therapist began with stressful experiences within my own family growing up: illness and loss, family members' mental illness and substance misuse, and the complex relational dynamics that come with intergenerational trauma and colliding cultural norms. This experience shaped my interest in child and family mental health, and my drive to walk alongside people of all ages as they make sense of what they've been through. Outside of the therapy room, I love spending time in nature, exploring parks around the city on walks, going on runs, and picnics. Coming from a family of artists and creatives, I enjoy dancing to live music, visiting art museums, and painting with watercolors. On lower-key days, I adore curling up with a cup of tea, a good book, and my two cats.
Psychotherapy lays the emotional groundwork that leads to a more happy and satisfying life. Many people think of psychotherapy, especially some kinds of traditional psychotherapy, as one-sided: the person in therapy talks and the therapist listens. But effective psychotherapy – therapy that heals – works because of the unique relationship that develops between the therapist and the person in therapy. I provide an environment that, because it is safe and non-judgmental, allows the person in therapy to open up in new and often unexpected ways and to experience and express his or her deepest thoughts and feelings. I use more than one therapeutic discipline, but my approach is ultimately tailored to the needs of the person I am working with. I help people become more emotionally self-aware so that they can experience greater self-esteem and satisfaction in life, better deal with depression, and cope with the anxiety that so often interferes with their sense of well-being. In addition to psychotherapy, I am a certified hypnotherapist and offer hypnotherapy to the people I work with. I am also available for hypnotherapy referrals as an adjunct from other clinicians. For safety concerns I am currently working online and by phone.
