Therapists for college students near New York University
Every journey begins with a single step. Recognizing the need for help and deciding to pursue therapy is the first step towards self-improvement. Please allow me to assist you in navigating your path to self-enlightenment. I am a licensed Social Worker and therapist with over 15 years of experience providing individual, family, and group therapy with adults and children. My goal is to assist you with recognizing your strengths and how they can be used to address any challenges and limitations so that you may flourish.
When you’re in the thick of it – work, kids, stress, relationships, grief, all of it – sometimes what you really need is someone who will sit with you, see you, and help you figure out what’s next. Not someone who rushes to label you. Not someone who nods silently while you unravel. Someone who gets it. Someone who’s lived enough life to understand that healing is about finding peace, one piece at a time. That’s why Counseling with Compassion was founded.
Thank you for taking the time to read more about my practice! I started my career working in college counseling centers and continue to enjoy working with students for both therapy and assessment services. In my therapy practice, I use a number of mindfulness based strategies that help with depression, anxiety, performance, attention, and relationships. I also have my 200 hour yoga certification and strongly believe in the importance of mind-body wellness. My assessment practice focuses on ADHD and learning disability diagnoses. I am experienced in providing the needed documentation for students registering with their disability support offices and when taking exams such as the GRE, GMAT, and LSAT.
Are your emotions getting the best of you — influencing behaviors that impact your relationships, career, or sense of self? Are worry thoughts or mood shifts becoming harder to manage? Building a life is difficult when strong emotions sweep you away. They can pull you from your values, your goals, and even your identity. Emotion regulation isn’t about getting rid of feelings — it’s about learning how to ride the wave without letting it carry you off course. I’m a DBT-Linehan Board of Certification, Certified Clinician — the gold standard for DBT providers. I specialize in emotion dysregulation and use evidence-based treatments including cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), exposure therapy, and trauma-informed therapy. I offer adherent DBT individual therapy and DBT skills training in both a group and 1:1 format. Navigating the decision to pursue therapy, whether for yourself or a loved one, is a step in the right direction. If you’re ready, reach out to schedule a free initial 15-minute consultation. On our call, we’ll discuss goals and what our work together could look like.
Welcome to Shifa Therapy LLC, a space for healing. My practice centers the Global Majority in NJ, NY, and PA, especially BIPOC folks within the LGBTQIA+ community. I integrate different approaches like Somatic Experiencing, IFS, EMDR, and Liberation Psychology to help navigate the stress, adversity, and trauma of life. My goal as your therapist is for you to be seen and understood as you are. No code-switching necessary. Throughout our work, I will invite you with patience and compassion, going at your pace as you build new adaptations toward thriving. Think of this as a relational and experiential kind of process that goes beyond insight and coping skills. Feel free to email me with questions about getting started. If I have a waitlist, I'll still offer a consultation call to see if we'd be a good fit for the future. I look forward to meeting you!

I'm currently working as a postdoctoral fellow. I earned my doctoral degree in Clinical & School Psychology from Roberts Wesleyan University. I completed my pre-doctoral internship at Nebraska Mental Health Centers in Lincoln, Nebraska. At this site, I received an extensive generalist training in therapeutic practices and psychological assessments, addressing a wide array of psychopathologies and demographics. I provide therapy services from an integrative perspective, drawing primarily from Person-Centered, Attachment, Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT), Dialectical Behavior (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) therapies. This means our work together will prioritize creating a safe, empathetic space where your unique experiences are deeply understood and respected. We'll explore how early relationships and patterns might be influencing your present struggles and how to build more secure connections. Additionally, you'll learn practical skills to identify and shift unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors, manage intense emotions and improve relationships, and cultivate mindfulness, acceptance, and a commitment to living in alignment with your values, even in the face of discomfort. My goal is to tailor our approach to your specific needs, empowering you with both insight and effective strategies for lasting change and a more fulfilling life. My significant experience in community mental health uniquely equips me to address anxiety disorders, mood disorders, personality disorders, behavioral issues, parenting training, severe and persistent mental illness, and trauma across diverse child, adolescent, and adult populations. My background in the school setting further allows me to provide comprehensive wrap-around services for children and families. Last, I have done extensive research on minority stress, the impact it has on mental health in the LGBTQ+ community, and subsequent affirmative evidence-based treatments. My training has also prepared me to provide comprehensive diagnostic and psychoeducational evaluations. This helps clients gain diagnostic clarification and provides a direction for treatment services.
I offer several ways to work on whatever is keeping you from your best. My focus is on present moment strategies to manage living in this world while having a dynamic connection with Spirit. I offer traditional therapy/coaching that has a pay per service sliding scale. If you are looking for increasing your ability to manage your emotions and navigate relationships of all kinds, give me a call and I'll tell you more about how I work. I am trained in many techniques that help people manage anxiety, depression, overall stress, nightmares, intrusive thoughts etc. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Meditation, and breathing techniques are a few of the skills I use and often teach each client I work with. At times life is a rough road for all of us. Give me a call and let's see if we are a good match to work together on strategies to make you more successful and at ease.
